Comments

  • Estrallita A National Historic Ship
  • Harbour Patrol Boat, Poole Harbour 1940-1945
  • She was painted grey with an AA Gun mounted on the Focsul. The mounting plates remain in place today.
  • Involvement in Operation Dynamo (evacuation of BEF, from Dunkirk)
  • It is recorded that admiralty records and harbour commissioners logs show she left Poole harbour on the 28th May 1940 and suggests she joined the flotilla of ships leaving Poole and sailing to Dover to take part in Operation Dynamo. The owners chose not to join the ADLS which is a private club with their own list of Dunkirk Little Ships so will not find Estrallita on their list.
  • Celebrity Ownership
  • From 19-59-1965 she was owned by TV personality Hughie Green who hosted Opportunity knocks. Whilst sailing to Morcombe for a summer show he saw red flares and went to investigate. He found two yachtsmen in trouble and brought them aboard as their yacht was sinking, He took them in to Newlyn Harbour and on arrival asked the Harbour master why no one had come to assist. The Harbour Master replied saying that a nearby RAF station did exercises off the coast and use red flares all the time. Hughie being an RAF reservist used his celebrity status to change the maritime law where red flags should only be used by vessels in trouble at sea.
  • Aristocratic Ownership
  • 1936-1938 owned by Captain Guy V Baxendale.
  • 1945-1947 Captain Bonham Christie whos mother owned Brownsea Island in Poole.
