Skipper training

Skipper training courses for both experienced and newcomers to boating

Completion of a training course is increasingly a requirement for insurance and for boating on European waterways. Our RYA Instructor offers a wide range of tuition from basic handling and competent crew training, VHF operators courses through to ICC and RYA Coastal Power Boat Training.

We strongly encourage all our owners to take the RYA Helmsman Course. The Helmsman Course will instruct both newcomers and more experienced boaters in the principles of better and safer boating. On completion, students will receive the RYA’s Inland Waterways Helmsman’s Certificate. At the same time, they can also take the written test for the RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) known as CEVNI which is now a legal necessity in many parts of Europe.

Chris Billson - East Coast Motorboat Training

Our training is conducted by East Coast Motorboat Training. Chris, Principal and Chief Instructor, has over 25 years boating experience on inland waterways of the UK and at sea. Courses are fully recognised by the RYA for Inland Waterways Crew, Inland Waterways Helmsman and Short Range Certificate VHF Radio. To discuss your training or to find out more information on what we can offer, please do not hesitate to contact Chris on 07570 794196 or by email chris@eastcoastmotorboattraining.co.uk

RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Course

Depending on experience, this course can be tailored to either one day or two. Hands-on with minimal theory, you will learn plenty of new skills for safety, helmsmanship, lock operations, Collision avoidance, engine checks and tips to make your boating safer and more enjoyable. Combined with the Crew course this works well for all the family. This course is also an entry level for ICC Power.

Minimum age 12. Certificates for children aged between 12 and 16 will be endorsed to show that they must use boats only under the supervision of a responsible adult.

RYA Inland Waterways Crew Course

Cruising the inland waterways is great fun for all ages. This entry level course is ideal for introducing the whole family to crewing a vessel on the inland waterways, and for giving them an understanding of how they can assist the helm including personal safety, rope work, basic boat handling and dealing with emergency situations. This can be run in conjunction with the Inland Waterways Helmsman’s course for everyone to enjoy.

Minimum age 8.

Non RYA Helmsman Tuition only

During this one day helmsman course we can tailor tuition to fully meet the needs of our clients. We can focus on the areas you would like to, or how about incorporating a day’s tuition with a coastal passage?

RYA Short Range Certificate VHF

This course is for anyone who wants to use a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a VHF with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). The course will be taught and assessed at our classroom training centre. The assessment will also include a short test paper.  Course book and assessment included.

RYA ICC Inland Power Training & Assessment >10M LOA, experience required (1 day)

The ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate for anyone who intends to use a boat abroad. We can offer ICC Inland Power endorsements when taken with the CENVI Examination. This course is for anyone who already has helmsman experience and requires improvement of their skills along with the assessment.

RYA ICC Inland Power Assessment only, experience required (half day)

The ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate for anyone who intends to use a boat abroad. We can offer ICC Inland Power endorsements when taken with the CENVI Examination. This course is for anyone who already has the required experience for the ICC assessment.

RYA ICC CEVNI Exam

CEVNI (Européen des Voies de Navigation Intérieure) is the code governing navigation on the interconnected European inland waterways. This exam is for anyone who is looking to boat on the Inland Waterways of Europe. CEVNI is not covered in any of the RYA’s courses, even those specific to inland waterways. It is therefore necessary to have a separate theory test on the CEVNI regulations.  There is no separate CEVNI certificate or CEVNI endorsement. Passing the ICC CEVNI test simply allows the Inland category on your ICC to be validated, thereby indicating that you have demonstrated knowledge of the traffic regulations applicable on inland waters or Europe.
